What is MOTUS?

MOTUS is a new registration system developed by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration that allows carriers to manage registrations, update and view company information, and manage other aspects of their account, all in one place. The system is a replacement for existing platforms that improves efficiency and strengthens security to reduce fraud.

When did MOTUS go live?

MOTUS was fully launched for all users on May 14th, 2026.

What does MOTUS do?

MOTUS streamlines the registration process by consolidating USDOT registration, account management, and compliance tasks into a single centralized system, improving efficiency, accuracy, and security.

Who is required to use MOTUS?

Entities that are required to register with the FMCSA, including those that require a USDOT number or authority to operate, must use MOTUS to manage their registration and account information. This includes:

  • Motor carriers
  • Brokers
  • Freight forwarders
  • Cargo tank facilities
  • Intermodal equipment providers

What can carriers do in MOTUS?

In MOTUS, carriers have access to a centralized platform where they can manage all aspects of their registration and account information. Available actions include:

  • Apply for, manage, or reactivate a USDOT number
  • Apply for or update operating authority
  • View and update company information
  • Complete required filings, including biennial updates
  • Monitor account status and registration activity
  • Access everything in one centralized platform

How is MOTUS different from existing systems?

Unlike existing systems that require users to navigate multiple platforms, MOTUS brings everything together in one centralized system. It also introduces stronger identity verification, real-time data validation, and a more user-friendly experience, making it easier and more secure for carriers to manage their information.

What are the benefits of MOTUS?

  • Improved security and fraud prevention
  • Faster updates and processing
  • More accurate and reliable data
  • Simplified account management in one system

Will existing systems still be available?

No, MOTUS replaces existing FMCSA registration systems. As MOTUS is implemented, current systems are phased out, and carriers transition to using MOTUS as the primary platform for managing registrations, filings, and account information. While some systems may remain accessible for a period of time, their registration features are no longer available, and all updates, registrations, and filings need to be completed in MOTUS.

Do carriers need to take any additional steps now that MOTUS is implemented?

If you already have a registered USDOT number, there are a few simple steps to get started with MOTUS.

  • Log into the MOTUS website using your existing Login.gov credentials associated with your FMCSA account.
  • Set up a new MOTUS company account
  • Completeidentity verification to link you to your business securely
  • Claim your company record using your USDOT number.
  • Your existing information will automatically transfer into MOTUS
  • Review and verify that information is accurate.
  • Make necessary updates
  • Certify your information to complete the setup
  • Begin using MOTUS.

Do carriers still use Login.gov with MOTUS?

Yes, carriers can use their Login.gov credentials to securely access their MOTUS account.

How does MOTUS improve safety?

MOTUS enhances transportation safety and efficiency by preventing unsafe operators from evading enforcement. The system includes advanced identity and safety checks that help identify and remove high-risk operators, such as chameleon carriers, from the industry.

It works by restricting re-registration, requiring strict identity verification, and helping prevent account hijacking. In addition, MOTUS can detect unsafe patterns and flag high-risk activity in real time, allowing issues to be addressed more quickly and effectively.

What should carriers do now that MOTUS is implemented?

Carriers should ensure they are actively using MOTUS to manage their registration and account information. This includes regularly reviewing and updating company details, completing required filings, and monitoring account activity. Staying up to date in MOTUS helps maintain compliance and ensures all information on file is accurate.
