English Proficiency Enforcement for Truck Drivers
US Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy announced on May 20th the reinstatement of the English language proficiency enforcement for commercial truck drivers. This includes both reading and speaking skills, necessary for understanding traffic signs and interacting with authorities. English proficiency was an existing regulation that, in 2016, Obama issued guidance to discourage law enforcement from removing truck drivers from the road based on this. A new two-step process will be used during roadside inspections, starting June 25, 2025, to assess English language proficiency and place drivers out of service who fail the test.
