What is the FMCSA safety rating score?

The FMCSA safety rating is an evaluation of a motor carrier’s compliance with the safety fitness standard. FMCSA may issue one of three safety ratings (Satisfactory, Conditional, Unsatisfactory) after a Rated Investigation. The safety rating score is based on a variety of topics such as:

  • Unsafe Driving
  • Crash Indicator
  • Hours of Service Compliance
  • Vehicle Maintenance
  • Controlled Substance and Alcohol
  • Hazardous Material Compliance
  • Driver Fitness

How do I check my FMCSA safety score?

FMSCA provides carrier snapshots free of charge. The Company Snapshot is a concise electronic record of a company’s identification, size, commodity information, and safety record, including the safety rating (if any), a roadside out-of-service inspection summary, and crash information. Go to https://safer.fmcsa.dot.gov/CompanySnapshot.aspx to view a company’s snapshot.

How do I lower my FMCSA safety score?

It’s important to abide by the guidelines set in place by FMCSA. Following the guidelines will ensure you are able to pass the safety audit.

What happens if you fail a FMCSA safety audit?

If a carrier fails the Safety Audit, FMCSA will suspend the carrier’s registration 15 days after notifying the carrier unless it demonstrates, within 10 days of the date of notice, that the Safety Audit contained an error on the part of a Safety Auditor. FMCSA notifies the carrier of results, either pass or fail, within 45 days of completing the Safety Audit.

The carrier can then have the Order of Suspension removed by presenting evidence they performed the necessary corrective action(s) within 30 days from the date of the Order of Suspension.
